Recently there's been an independent effort to add ASS support to ExoPlayer, though they decided to completely reinvent the wheel instead of using an existing library - while I understand that linking to a C\C++ library to a Java app is not desirable, they didn't even seem to consider the idea of doing that as a stopgap measure and then slowly replacing it with their own code - and the effort seems like it's kind of stalled out after an initial flurry of effort.
